Miscegenation
Macs will soon be shipped able to run Windows natively. This development was expected, after Apple went over from IBM-made to Intel-made chips last year. But the change in the wind is still startling: for the first time, since the great Mac/PC rivalry grew out of the chaotic competition of popular personal machines in the 1980s, you'll be able to have it both ways right out of the box. It's interesting to consider whether this is more a win, so to speak, for Apple, as technology leader and amplifier of 'design' culture, or for Microsoft, as marketplace leader and amplifier of consumer culture. No doubt there's thoughtful commentary out there touching on this question. I haven't bothered to turn any up, though.
