Pentecost
From this morning's reading of the Gospel, from John 15 & 16, at
Emmanuel Lutheran in Catonsville:
When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.... And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.... He will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. (NRSV)

I grew up on the NIV and KJV and I have always understood "Holy Spirit" in this context. "Advocate" doesn't carry the same punch, even if the meaning is close to the Greek.
Hey Mrs Irani, good to see you are still out there! I check in at your site pretty often but in vain these days.
I just used the translation that was used in church that morning, which turned out to be NRSV. I grew up on King James too, which says 'Comforter' where this says 'Advocate', and on the NASV (supposed to be among the most 'straight' translations), which says 'Helper'. NIV actually says 'Counselor'. No idea about the Greek, for my part, but I take it from the variations in translation that the Greek isn't easy to pin down precisely. All, anyhow, do seem to leave it fairly plain that it's the capital-S Spirit that Jesus refers to.
Hope you guys are doing well!
